Description

The Natural History of FliesFlies that have any direct effect on Man are only a small proportion of the eighty to one hundred thousand species which constitute the Order Diptera. "To discuss adequately a group so rich and varied it is necessary to particularize, mentioning the names of species, genera, families or larger groups," writes Professor Oldroyd. Yet, he has tried to present more of a picture of flies in evolution than a discussion of classification and arrangement.

Flies that have any direct effect on Man are only a small proportion of the eighty to one hundred thousand species which constitute the Order Diptera. "To discuss adequately a group so rich and varied it is necessary to particularize, mentioning the names of species, genera, families or larger groups," writes Professor Oldroyd. Yet, he has tried to present more of a picture of flies in evolution than a discussion of classification and arrangement. Part One is a general description of flies and their life histories: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adult flies. Part Two surveys the flies in sixteen groups, in what appears to be an ascending order of evolution, as seen from the viewpoint of natural history. "When I point out similarities of habit I do not necessarily wish to maintain that the flies concerned are closely related," he writes. "On the contrary, it cannot be overemphasized that flies have made the same evolutionary experiments again and again, and much of the interest in studying them is to see how different groups tackle similar problems." Part Three deals with the effects of flies on Man, the communal behaviour of flies, and their future in a rapidly changing world.

The Future is Now
Format: Hardcover
The author makes a compelling argument that the world is fracturing into two principal trade blocs, the U.S.A bloc and the China bloc. Even cursory review of the daily business news confirms the author's argument is taking shape now. This is an important book for those interested in geopolitics, economics, and even those who are trying to determine where to invest their funds based on changing global dynamics.

Cute book and engaging story
Format: Paperback
My grand daughter reads at a 3rd grade reading level, so doesn't want to read the easy readers but loses interest easily with traditional chapter books. This little book was a perfect fit. She's an axolotl fan so the pictures and the story line kept her engaged. There's even a couple of pages of axolotl facts at the end of the book. Well worth adding to her book shelf!

Quick, fun read
Format: Kindle
I purchased this because my son and I have been raising 2 albino axolotls since 2022. The illustrations are very cute and well done. The story includes a few characters and even though it's so short, there is clear character development. I would recommend this for children under the age of 8 to be read to. With repetition, they will easily be able to read this book (apart from those with reading challenges). My 12 year old read it through in one sitting and added his own unique reading style to it which was really funny. I wouldn't recommend reading this on a small screen as the font is small.
